Teruel, a town in southern Aragon, has an important medieval legacy in its historic quarter. The cathedral tower, in addition to the towers of San Salvador, San MartÃn and San Pedro, is a jewel amongst other Moorish monuments and has been been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Teruel is a legendary city, thanks to the famous story about the lovers of Teruel.
It is full of charming places, such as the central Torico Square (Plaza del Torico), the aqueduct with the arches and the popular walking route around the Oval (Óvalo). The streets in the city center lead to the Torico Square in the center of which stands a column topped by a small sculpture of a bull, which has become the city's emblem. Visitors can also admire the various early twentieth century modernist facades built around the square.
Mudejar Heritage
To experience Mudejar heritage in Teruel, visitors need to come to the Cathedral, which was built in the thirteenth century on the site of the old church. The Cathedral's most striking features include its square tower with ceramic decoration and, in the Cathedral's interior, the rich ornamentation of its Mudejar ceiling. It is one of the most important Mudejar constructions still preserved in the country today.
There are other interesting Mudejar towers dominating the city's skyline, including the San Salvador Tower in New Street, with its brick facade, double arches and richly decorated ceramic details. It is almost identical to the tower above the aforementioned San MartÃn's Church (dating back to the XIV Century) and the San Pedro tower.
A chapel in the Church of St. Peter refers to the famous story of the lovers of Teruel. Legend has it that in the thirteenth century the young lovers Diego and Elizabeth died because they could not be together. Two graves with carved figures of the lovers, designed by Juan de Avalos, now house the mummified bodies of the lovers.
There are even more surprises for visitors on the streets where the city walls once stood, such as the aqueduct with the arches that was built in the sixteenth century, facing the ravine that divides the city.

The town of Valderrobres is the highlight of Matarraña. Its town hall and castle are connected to the gothic church of Santa Maria la Mayor via a causeway.
Alcañiz is one of the main cities in the province of Aragon. Its fascinating historical and artistic heritage begins in the Plaza de España, a beautiful medieval square where the town hall and fish market are located. The neighbouring ex-collegiate church of Santa MarÃa la Mayor is a large temple that combines baroque features with Moorish influences. Military buildings like the Calatravos Castle also still exist here.
